5 Ways to Make Your Move More Eco-Friendly

July 14, 2019

Moving can be a stressful process, particularly if maintaining an eco-friendly lifestyle is a priority. However, there are some clever ways to ensure the moving process stays in line with a generally green routine. Even a novice who is just beginning to become more conscious about the detrimental implications of superfluous waste, there are several actions that can be taken to make the moving transition environmentally friendly. Compiled below is a list of tips to design a clean, positive moving experience that contributes to a cleaner environment.

1. Use Available Materials

Chances are there are boxes stored away in the garage and maybe some forgotten bins up in the attic that were supposed to be used "later." When "later" inevitably comes, those bins could become a saving grace. Searching throughout the home for available materials will likely result in the uncovering of boxes and containers to use for packing belongings. Ingenuity can be employed by using old gym bags, reusable shopping bags, furniture drawers, suitcases, and even appliances like washers, dryers, and refrigerators.

2. Recycle and Donate

The moving process usually causes homeowners to uncover old clothing, forgotten keepsakes, and maybe even old toys that kids have outgrown. This is an excellent time to purge and donate items that will not be needed in the new home. If the items are in excellent condition, it is even possible to make a profit if they are sold. It is also an appropriate time to recycle unused plastic, aluminum, and old newspapers.

3. Protect Breakables Creatively

Most people opt for bubble wrap or foam wrap to protect dishes and other glass items. However, this can be used as an opportunity to pack creatively with the use of dish towels, cleaning rags, and even t-shirts and other clothing items. They are just as effective and can be used in the new home without having to be discarded after single-use.

4. Plan Driving Carefully

Instead of making multiple trips back-and-forth to move items to a new location, rent and load a moving truck large enough to handle all items headed to the new home. There are several options for trucks that use cleaner fuel and if moving long-distance, the use of a train for transport may be something to consider. If renting a truck is not an option, load your vehicle(s) in the most efficient way possible, leaving no space unused.

5. Pack the Kitchen Last

Homecooked meals can be the most heartwarming; however, during a move, those plates, glasses, mugs, and silverware will need to be packed away to be transported to the new home. There will likely be some take-out food during this transition but even though this is the case, eco-friendly efforts can be made. Instead of opting for plastic forks, spoons, and plates, try saving a fork, knife, and spoon for each member of your family to be left readily available in a special tote bag. Those on-the-go meals do not need to thwart efforts to keep moving green. Another option could be to purchase a camping tableware set that includes all necessary items and as a plus, it can be kept for future trips!

With some conscientious and creative efforts, moving can be completed in a way that is eco-friendly. Whether the practice of staying green is deeply embedded into a family lifestyle or there is a sudden curiosity about how to better protect the environment, these simple suggestions can make a world of difference. Reading through these tips is a forward-moving step and can help you better understand the impact each action has toward the environment's overall well-being.
